Edgar Martinez Agrees to Terms On New Contract

Majors Best DH Agrees to 2000 Pact With Club Option for 2001

Seattle Mariners President Chuck Armstrong recently announced that the M's designated hitter Edgar Martinez has agreed to a contract extension for the 2000 season. The contract also includes a club option for 2001. Per club policy, no terms were disclosed.

Edgar Martinez Hits Another Home Run

Martinez, who would have been eligible to file for free agency after the World Series, has spent his entire professional career with the Seattle organization since signing as a non-drafted free agent in 1982.

"We are very happy to have Edgar under contract for the 2000 season," Armstrong said. "He's the best designated hitter in Major League history, but, just as important, he's a Mariner and a very important part of this community. We want to make sure players we sign and develop have every opportunity to finish their careers in Seattle."

Martinez, 36, posted his fifth consecutive season hitting over .300 in 1999, finishing fourth in the American League with a .337 mark. He led the A.L. with a .447 on-base percentage and also finished among the league-leaders with 97 walks. Martinez hit .360 (91x253) after the All-Star Break, including a sizzling .465 (66x142) in SAFECO Field. He raised his career average to .320 and his career average as a designated hitter to .330. In addition, his seven steals (in nine attempts) were his most since swiping a career-high 14 in 1992.

"Martinez is a true pro-fessional hitter," Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. "He hits to all fields, he hits for power, he drives in runs and he gets on base. He's a key part of our offense and I'm pleased to have him back."

A two-time A.L. batting champion (1992 & 1995), Martinez has led the Mariners in average six times, including the past three years, and has led the team in doubles four times. He ranks among the top-three in nearly every major Mariners career offensive category, including leading in batting average, doubles and walks and ranking second in games, at-bats, runs, hits, total bases and extra-base hits. He is third in home runs and RBI.

"I'm really happy to extend my contract," Martinez said. "I'm looking forward to next year to see if we can win a championship."
